City of New Orleans Reminds Residents that Friday, January 17 is the Last Day for Christmas Tree Pick Up Requests through 3-1-1

Thanks to the individuals and businesses that have participated in this year's Christmas Tree Recycling Program, the City of New Orleans has collected 9,000 trees so far, surpassing last year's total collection of 8,000 trees. Other contributors of trees for the recycling program include City Park's Celebration in the Oaks, A's Toy Soldier, AB Tree Farms and Home Depot in New Orleans East.

Residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to request a Christmas tree pickup through Friday, Jan. 17 if their tree was not collected this week. Requests can also be made by visiting https://nola311.org/.

After making the 3-1-1 request, residents should immediately place their tree on the curb in a position that is easy for the contractor to see. Residents should keep the tree in place even if it is not picked up immediately as the contractor's route may not include it on the same day that the tree is placed.

Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel; lighting and all ornamentation must be removed before recycling pick up. Residents should also try to remove plastic bases from their trees, wooden bases are acceptable.

The program is coordinated by the City of New Orleans Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Army National Guard (LANG).

The trees will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter to be dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge in the spring. The project benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment while also providing valuable training hours for pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment.
