The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, met with the other leaders of the governing majority - Matteo Salvini, Antonio Tajani and Maurizio Lupi - at Palazzo Chigi today for a routine discussion on key Government policy matters.
Among the issues discussed, there was a particular focus on the extension of the National Escape Clause to also include investments in the energy sector, which the Italian Government secured thanks to the initiative it pursued at EU level.
Full alignment emerged during the meeting regarding the option to access the additional flexibility permitted by European rules and focus the greater spending capacity over the next two years on tackling high energy costs.
It was also reaffirmed that any decision to access the National Escape Clause for defence, security and energy spending will be made in full compliance with Parliament's prerogatives and will be subject to the required approval process.
