WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) led a bipartisan resolution designating the month of June as "Great Outdoors Month." The resolution - which Peters introduced with U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) - encourages responsible participation in outdoor recreational activities in state and national parks.
"Michigan's natural beauty is part of what makes our state so great. Whether it's the Great Lakes, our amazing coastlines, or serene parks, there is truly something for everyone here," said Senator Peters. "I'm proud to help lead this bipartisan resolution to encourage more folks to get out and enjoy the natural treasures here in Michigan and all across our great nation, and to highlight the importance of preserving these lands and waters for generations to come."
The resolution is supported by Outdoor Recreation Roundtable.
"Outdoor Recreation Roundtable applauds Senators Daines and Peters for once again leading this important tradition in the Senate and for their enduring commitment to growing a sustainable outdoor recreation economy for the benefit of all Americans. Great Outdoors Month is a moment to celebrate what the data makes clear: outdoor recreation is a $1.3 trillion economic engine supporting 5.2 million jobs and adding $351 million every day from recreation on federal lands and waters alone. Beyond the economics, decades of research confirm that getting outside - in urban and rural communities alike - improves health outcomes and quality of life across the board. We invite everyone to mark the occasion this month by enjoying the great outdoors," said Jessica Turner, President, Outdoor Recreation Roundtable.
In 2025, the National Park Service reported a record 323 million recreation visits to America's 63 national parks. Michigan's Department of Natural Resources estimates 38 million visitors annually to Michigan's 103 state parks.
