Human Rights Council 49th Session of the Universal Periodic Review - Armenia

Ministry Statements & Speeches: 1 May 2025

Mr President,

We warmly welcome the delegation from Armenia.

We welcome Armenia's work in advancing the genocide prevention agenda and in ratifying international human rights treaties such as Protocol No. 13 to the European Convention on Human Rights concerning the Abolition of the Death Penalty in All Circumstances.

New Zealand recommends that Armenia:

  1. Reform its legislation on the restriction of the legal capacity of people with psychosocial or intellectual disabilities so as to better protect the rights of persons with disabilities.
  2. Establish mechanisms for prompt, thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the allegations of ill-treatment of detainees by law enforcement authorities.
  3. Strengthen existing measures to provide more comprehensive support for survivors of domestic violence, including the provision of shelters for survivors and their children.

We thank the delegation for their participation today and wish them a successful review.

Thank you Mr President.
