30-Year Saint Paul Fire Department Veteran Duren Appointed Interim Fire Chief

SAINT PAUL-Today, Mayor Melvin Carter appointed Assistant Chief Greg Duren as Interim Fire Chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department, working closely with Mayor-Elect Her. While Her's administration begins the process to appoint a permanent Fire Chief, Chief Duren will lead the department during this transition.

"Interim Chief Duren leads with a people-first mindset, prioritizing both the residents of Saint Paul and the members of this department," said Mayor Carter. "I am confident he will guide the Fire Department with integrity, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to keeping our community safe during this transition."

Interim Chief Duren brings more than 30 years of experience with the Saint Paul Fire Department. He began his career in July 1994 and has served in every sworn rank, including firefighter, fire equipment operator (FEO), captain, district chief, deputy chief, assistant chief of EMS, and assistant chief. His experience gives him a strong, firsthand understanding of the department's work at every level.

One of the longest-serving paramedics in department history, Interim Chief Duren has played a key role in emergency medical services across Saint Paul. In spring 2024, the Cityappointed him Deputy Fire Chief, where he led the "A" Shift and helped guide daily operations and long-term planning. Since August, he has served as Assistant Fire Chief of EMS, supporting department-wide operations for Minnesota's busiest fire-based EMS system.

Interim Chief Duren begins his appointment tomorrow following the departure of Fire Chief Butch Inks, who concluded his service today.

"Interim Chief Duren began his career with the Saint Paul Fire Department more than three decades ago and has proudly served in nearly every role within the department," said Fire Chief Inks. "I am confident he will provide steady leadership and continue the department's strong tradition of service."

The City of Saint Paul will begin a formal process to identify and appoint a permanent Fire Chief in the coming months.
