On April 7, media and fans packed the MVP Arena atrium to officially welcome Siena's 20th men's basketball coach (back) to the Capital Region.
As noted in a
Times Union article, Siena men's basketball coach
Nevada Smith and his wife, Lindsay, spent summers in Saratoga Springs and were married in Ballston Spa. They're now proud to call the Albany area home.
Excerpt from the article:
Smith came to Loudonville to watch practices and talk basketball during the summer when Jamion Christian and Carmen Maciariello coached Siena. Smith acknowledged he thought about someday being in their sneakers.
"Yes, because it's Siena," he said. "It's a special place. … You can feel it even when you're on campus, like I was, for four hours on a Tuesday."
Coach Smith told
News10 ABC Sports Director Griffin Haas,
"This is one of the best jobs in the country."
President Chuck Seifert addressed the fans and the media before John D'Argenio, vice president and director of athletics, officially introduced Coach Smith. President Seifert told the crowd:
"What makes Nevada the right fit for Siena goes beyond basketball. He understands that success is about more than what happens on the court. It's about developing young men of character. It's about academic excellence. It's about preparing student-athletes to succeed in every aspect of their lives.
That commitment aligns perfectly with who we are as a University. At Siena, we are in a moment of extraordinary momentum. "Siena is Rising" - that's not a tagline, that's our reality... Basketball is not separate from that story. It is part of our identity."
