Exploration of Emerging Tolling Technology on the M50

An innovative research and development initiative is underway on the M50 to explore emerging tolling technologies through a mobile app-based solution. The project is being led by Indra Sistemas, with support from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Easytrip.

As part of the proof of concept, participating Easytrip customers will use a mobile app to record their M50 journeys over a five-month period while continuing to use their existing toll tag. All toll transactions will continue to be processed through participants' Easytrip accounts as normal.

TII is supporting the initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to innovation and research across the national road network. The objective is to develop a better understanding of emerging tolling technologies and their performance in a live operational environment.

The project will provide insights into the capabilities, benefits, challenges and limitations of app-based tolling solutions, helping TII stay informed about evolving tolling technologies and international developments in the sector.

There is no change to current tolling arrangements on the M50, and the initiative does not indicate any planned changes to the existing tolling system.
