Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Harry Theoharis’ Statement at the Foreign Affairs Council (Trade) (Brussels, 14.07.2025)

Following the conclusion of the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council (Trade), held in Brussels on 14 July 2025, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Harry Theoharis made the following statement:

"In a changing geostrategic environment, trade is not just an economic tool but a vital instrument of power for the European Union. It strengthens our position on the global stage and contributes to enhancing the competitiveness of the European economy.

Today, we had the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing the transatlantic partnership between the EU and the United States, the evolving dynamics of the Union's relations with China, as well as the numerous trade agreements in which we have recently invested".

On EU-US relations, Mr. Theoharis said:

"Our transatlantic alliance remains of fundamental importance. Europe always prioritizes cooperation over confrontation. However, with unity and resolve, we are prepared to defend European interests if necessary".

Referring to the EU's relationship with China, the Deputy Minister noted:

"With regard to China, we examined the Union's priorities and look forward to a forthcoming Summit in the coming weeks, which we hope will go beyond symbolism and deliver tangible outcomes".

Finally, on the EU's trade agreements with third countries, Mr.Theoharis said:

"Trade agreements, most recently the EU-Indonesia political agreement reached yesterday, are of strategic importance. They offer alternative supply routes for the European economy and enhance our export potential. We believe that strengthening the European Union will come through the successful conclusion of such agreements, within a complex and multilayered geostrategic environment".
