Boyfriend Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Killing His Romantic Partner

WASHINGTON - Tyjuan Bazemore, 35, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 20 years in prison today for the shooting death of his girlfriend, 27-year-old Nyesha Tranae Walden-Hatcher, on February 2, 2026, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Bazemore pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed on July 10, 2026. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman sentenced Bazemore to 20 years in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release.

According to the government's evidence, Bazemore and Walden-Hatcher were inside 3120 16th Street Apartment #13 after going to the liquor store. While inside the apartment, Bazemore shot Walden-Hatcher in the head, causing her death. After he shot Walden-Hatcher, Bazemore proceeded to run upstairs and then returned downstairs several times. Bazemore put on shoes and a hoodie, attempted to knock down the camera at the foot of the staircase on the first floor, and eventually left the apartment complex.

At approximately 2:57 a.m., members of the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to 3120 16th Street Apartment #13. After no response at the door, MPD pushed open the door and located Walden-Hatcher, unresponsive on the floor, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. Despite all life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the murder, Bazemore fled to Connecticut where he was located and extradited back to D.C.

At the time of this killing, Bazemore had two open domestic violence assault cases concerning the victim. Bazemore was ordered, as a condition of his release, to stay away from her and not to possess firearms.

This case is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Dinan.
