Mobile, Ala. - Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis is expanding the City of Mobile's 2026 Critical Repair Grant Program, tripling the number of low-to-moderate-income Mobilians who will be able to receive financial support for roof repairs this year.
Administered by the City's Neighborhood Development Department, the Critical Repair Grant Program helps qualifying homeowners address serious issues that threaten the safety and livability of their homes. In 2026, the program will focus on roof replacements - one of the most urgent and costly repairs many residents face.
Traditionally funded through federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the program will see a major expansion this year. With the addition of $900,000 in discretionary funding from Mayor Cheriogotis, the number of households served is expected to grow from approximately 75 to more than 220.
"For many families, seniors, and residents on fixed incomes, a failing roof isn't just an inconvenience - it can make a home unlivable," Mayor Cheriogotis said. "By expanding this year's program, we're helping stabilize neighborhoods, protect residents, and prevent blight before it starts."
Applications for the Critical Repair Grant Program must be picked up in person beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, at the Levon C. Manzie Neighborhood Resource Center at 110 N. Lafayette Street. Completed applications and required supporting documentation must be returned by 4 p.m. on May 1.
To qualify, applicants must own and occupy the home in need of repair, reside within the city limits, and meet federal income guidelines. A valid driver's license or another form of identification is required to pick up an application on April 7. For more information about the Critical Repair Grant Program, contact the City's Neighborhood Development Department at (251) 208-6294.
The opening of this year's application cycle coincides with National Community Development Week, which runs April 6-10. During this time, the City of Mobile's Neighborhood Development Department will host several events highlighting programs and resources available to residents.
