ILO launches new project on occupational safety and health in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT (ILO News) - On 12 December 2024, the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the project "Improving Labour Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Systems in Uzbekistan" during a roundtable discussion in Tashkent. Supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), this initiative aligns with Uzbekistan's Decent Work Country Programme and is implemented within the the ILO's flagship programme Safety + Health for All.

The project aims to strengthen labour inspection systems, improve workplace safety, and foster a preventive safety culture through enhanced legislation, capacity-building initiatives, and collaborative partnerships among government, employers, and workers.

A key outcome of the launch event was the introduction of the draft National OSH Profile and the establishment of an OSH Council, which brings together leading companies to exemplify preventive practices within supply chains.

Further discussions on Uzbekistan's OSH priorities were held on 15 January 2025 during a roundtable organized by the Ministry of Poverty Reduction and Employment. The event, attended by the National Commission on Combating Human Trafficking and Decent Work Issues, Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan and the Confederation of Employers, as well as leading experts, scholars, and members of the public, addressed the draft National Programme for the Further Improvement of OSH for 2025-2027, currently under public review, and highlighted recent advances in creating decent working conditions and preventing occupational injuries and illnesses.

The ILO remains committed to supporting Uzbekistan in achieving significant OSH reforms, enhancing compliance with international labour standards, and fostering safer workplaces across the country.
