DNC Statement on Successfully Stopping Question 1 in Maine, Protecting Absentee Voting Arrow

Today, voters in Maine resoundingly rejected Question 1, which would have ended absentee voting as we know it across the state.

Question 1 would have eliminated two days of absentee voting, ended absentee voting status for seniors and people with disabilities, limited the number of drop boxes to just one per municipality, and instituted onerous new ID requirements.

Maine voters rejected this cynical attempt to curb voting rights funded by far-right activists, who spent over half a million dollars to push Question 1, in yet another attempt by Donald Trump's allies to undermine Americans' voting rights and access to the ballot. In stark contrast, the DNC worked alongside Democrats across the state to oppose the measure, including the DNC organizing team contacting over 86,000 Maine voters to urge them to vote "No" on Question 1.

DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

"Tonight's results are a major win for all Mainers. Question 1 would have ended absentee voting as we know it, further diluting the voting rights of people with disabilities, seniors, and working Mainers who are unable to take the day off from work to vote. By contacting over 86,000 voters, the DNC was proud to support efforts to ensure Mainers' voices are heard at the ballot box, not the interests of far-right billionaires. Mainers sent a clear message tonight: Our democracy and fundamental rights to vote and choose our own leaders are not for sale."
