YUMA, Ariz. - The City of Yuma announces the retirement of City Clerk Lynda Bushong after 18 years of dedicated service to the organization and the community. Throughout her career, Bushong supported local government operations while helping expand access to public records and services for residents.
Bushong joined the City of Yuma in 2008 as Deputy City Clerk and was appointed to her current role in 2010. She has often credited the mentorship she received from those who previously served in the Clerk's Office with helping prepare her to step into the position.
In her role, Bushong helped guide the Clerk's Office through several operational improvements that enhanced efficiency and expanded access to public records. Public Records requests were automated, allowing residents to submit requests online more easily, and the office is preparing to launch a public portal where users will be able to search documents such as ordinances, resolutions, and approved Council meeting minutes.
In addition, she assisted with the transition from large, printed Council agenda packets - which once averaged 400 to 450 pages - to electronic distribution, improving accessibility while reducing printing costs and streamlining the process for City leadership.
"Congratulations to our City Clerk Lynda Bushong on her well-earned retirement," said Mayor Doug Nicholls. "Throughout her career, she has been an essential part of the Yuma City Clerk's Office, helping build a strong and dependable team that serves our community with professionalism and integrity. Lynda's dedication to public service and commitment to the people of Yuma and to many Municipal Clerks throughout the state will leave a lasting impact. We thank her for the many years she has devoted to making our local government stronger and wish her the best in this next chapter."
Throughout her career, Bushong consistently emphasized service, professionalism, and public access to government information, while recognizing the dedication of the Clerk's Office staff and the important role they play in supporting the work of the Mayor, City Council, and the community.
Her dedication to service and to the profession has also been recognized at the state level. The Arizona Municipal Clerks' Association honored her with the President's Award of Distinction for assisting the organization's leadership in advancing its vision and mission. She was also named the Arizona Municipal Clerks' Association's 2024 Clerk of the Year, recognizing excellence and leadership among municipal clerks across the state.
During her time with the City, Bushong served alongside three mayors, multiple City Councils, four City Administrators, and numerous members of the City's leadership team - reflecting both the longevity of her service and her consistent leadership within the organization.
"I've had the opportunity to work alongside Lynda for more than 15 years and have seen firsthand the dedication she brings to her role," said Acting City Administrator Jay Simonton. "Her leadership, professionalism, and commitment to public service have made a lasting impact on this organization and the community we serve."
As she prepares for retirement, Bushong shared that the relationships she formed throughout her career will remain the most meaningful part of her journey.
"The best part of any job is the people you meet along the way," Lynda said. "I want everyone to know that I am grateful for each and every one of you. I'm not saying goodbye - just turning the page. Thank you for being part of my journey."
The City of Yuma thanks Lynda for her many years of dedicated service and the meaningful contributions she has made to both the organization and the community. A public reception honoring her will be held at Yuma City Hall on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, immediately following the City Council meeting. All are welcome to attend.
