Temporary Relocation Notice: James Brown Statue

James Brown Statue to Be Temporarily Relocated for Downtown Construction

AUGUSTA, GA (July 15, 2025) - As construction continues through downtown Augusta, one of the following areas impacted will be the section of Broad Street between 8th and 9th Streets. On July 17, 2025, the James Brown statue, currently located in front of the Augusta Common, will be temporarily relocated to accommodate the development of a redesigned public space.

With authorization from the James Brown Family, Augusta-Richmond County will partner with the Augusta Museum of History to facilitate the relocation. While off display, the statue will be securely stored in a climate-controlled environment at the Augusta Museum of History for safekeeping during the construction period.

Upon completion of construction, the statue will return to Broad Street and serve as the centerpiece of the newly developed James Brown Linear Park. The park will include interactive elements, visual displays of musical works, and a timeline of achievements.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance public spaces through infrastructure improvements and cultural investments.
