HONOLULU - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) will close both directions of Kamehameha Highway (Route 80) between Kilani Avenue and Whitmore Avenue from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026. The full closure will allow crews to do an in-depth inspection and maintenance following a strike of Karsten Thot Bridge Tuesday afternoon.
An initial inspection by an HDOT inspector found the beams of the bridge damaged by the strike were not an immediate hazard allowing for proper setup for the closure.
Message boards will be placed on the H-2 northbound and at Kamehameha Highway southbound before the Kamananui split to notify drivers to take Wilikinia Drive or Kamananui Road.
Should additional closures be needed after 2 p.m. tomorrow, HDOT will provide another update.
