AvCarb Material Solutions' Chris Robertson, Director of Sales and Marketing, and John Gaffney, Manager of Research and Development Engineering, will speak at Carbon 26's, Rayon-Based Carbon Fiber Replacement seminar presented by Composite World, November 10-12 in Huntsville, Alabama.
The presentation will evaluate spun-PAN carbon fabric as a replacement for rayon in ablative composites. AvCarb converts stretch-broken oxidized PAN into spun yarn and woven fabric. It tailors weave construction, areal weight, heat treatment, and carbon content (75-99.9%) to balance thermal conductivity, fiber stability, oxidation resistance, and processability. An initial fabric with 88% carbon content, an areal weight of 380 g/m², and an 8-harness satin weave has been supplied for evaluation. Composite testing will assess whether the fabric meets performance requirements and help define the optimal fabric construction and processing window.
