Overview

The Industrial Production Index registered growth of 8.2 per cent in April 2026, with marked the highest growth registered since September 2022 bolstered by the expansion across all sectors

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) remained positive in April 2026, registering a growth of 8.2 per cent (March 2026: 3.1%). The output growth in the Manufacturing led the way, with an increase of 8.3 per cent (March 2026: 5.5%) coupled with the turnaround to 6.8 per cent in the production of the Mining sector (March 2026: -6.5%). In the meantime, the Electricity sector expanded by 10.5 per cent (March 2026: 4.8%) during the month. However, on a month-on-month basis, the IPI experienced a contraction by 3.4 per cent after registering a positive 9.3 per cent growth in the previous month. The downturn was due to a decline in the Manufacturing (-4.4%) and Mining (-1.6%) sectors, while Electric grew by 2.1 per cent.

The output for the export-oriented industries which accounted for two-thirds of Manufacturing sector, expanded by 8.5 per cent in April 2026 as compared to 6.7 per cent registered in the previous month. The expansion was supported mainly by the Manufacture of computer, electronics & optical products which remained double-digit growth by 14.6 per cent; and followed by the Manufacture of coke & refined petroleum products at 4.2 per cent. Additionally, Manufacture of vegetable & animal oils & fats also supported the growth at 9.3 per cent. This year-on-year growth is reflected in the country's manufactured goods exports performance, which increased by 11.7 percent in April 2026. Compared to March 2026, the export-oriented industries decreased by 8.7 per cent after recording a positive 11.9 per cent growth in the previous month.

In the meantime, the domestic oriented industries increased by 8.0 per cent in April 2026, compared to 2.8 per cent in the previous month. This positive growth was driven by Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers & semi-trailers which registered a vigorous performance of 13.5 per cent and a 8.6 per cent growth in Manufacture of food processing products. Additionally, there was an increase in the production of manufacturing output related to construction activities namely the Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery & equipment (5.8%); and Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products (6.7%). In comparison with March 2026, the domestic oriented industries increased by 5.3 per cent from 1.4 per cent recorded in the previous month.

The uptick of 6.8 per cent in the Mining sector in April 2026 was due to a robust growth in Natural Gas output by 16.6 per cent (March 2026: -3.4%). Meanwhile, the Crude Oil & Condensate production recorded a decrease of 6.4 per cent (March 2026: -11.3%). As compared to the previous month, the Mining index decreased by 1.6 per cent after registering a positive growth of 12.3 per cent rise in the preceding month. Moreover, the generation of Electricity expanded by 10.5 per cent year-on-year in April 2026 (March 2026: 4.8%). On a month-on-month basis, the Electricity index grew by 2.1 per cent (March 2026: 12.0%).

On a global scale, the IPI for several countries increased in April 2026, including Singapore (17.6%); United States (1.4%); and Vietnam (9.3%); with slower growth seen in Japan (2.3%); China (4.1%); Taiwan (14.2%); and followed by South Korea (1.5%). Conversely, Thailand experienced a downturn 0.4 per cent during this month.

Summarising this statement on the IPI performance for the first four months of this year (January - April 2026), the IPI increased by 5.0 per cent compared to the same period in 2025, with the Manufacturing sector indices showing an expansion of 6.3 per and Electricity sector at 6.5 per cent, while the Mining index showed a decrease of 0.6 per cent.
