Dallas ISD News: Another chapter in SOC history celebrated with community parade

"We wanted to do the parade right here in 'The Cliff,' says Principal Willie Johnson. "There have been talks of it being downtown, but we wanted it to be right here in the community that has supported us."

On the streets that raised them, the South Oak Cliff High School Golden Bears celebrated another historic milestone Saturday, as students, alumni, families, and longtime supporters lined the neighborhood for a championship parade honoring the 2025 UIL Class 5A Division II state champions.

The Golden Bears once again stood at the center of attention, but this time surrounded by the community that has powered one of the most dominant runs in Texas high school football history.

After a two-year title drought, South Oak Cliff reclaimed the throne with a 35-19 victory over Dr. Thomas E. Randle High School, capturing the program's latest state championship and capping another memorable season. The win marked SOC's fifth consecutive appearance in a state championship game, placing the Golden Bears among an elite group of just eight programs in Texas to reach that milestone.

For head coach Jason Todd, the celebration extended far beyond football.

"It means a lot seeing the entire city support and embrace the student athletes on this journey we have been on. And it lays a blueprint on how success in sports impacts many things off the field. The overall school has improved academically, and it has instilled some pride in the community, not only in Oak Cliff, but Dallas as a whole," Todd said.

Todd's latest title also etched his name into the history books, as he became the first Black head coach to win three Texas high school football UIL state championships. But as floats rolled past cheering crowds and players waved to the crowds, the focus remained on collective achievement.

"What we have been able to accomplish at South Oak Cliff is the greatest story in Texas high school history. We have built SOC into a dynasty built off administration support, coaches that have a purpose bigger than the game, student athletes buying into the culture of what it means to be a part of a team, parental buy-in, andcommunity support," Todd continues. "Our legacy will stand the test of time. Not just for the last 5 years but for those that came before the good times that laid the foundation that we are standing on to get to this point, and this is not the end, it's only the beginning," Todd said.

The parade served as both a celebration and a statement of how deeply the program is woven into the fabric of South Oak Cliff.

At the conclusion of the parade at the football field, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins officially proclaimed January 10 as "Coach Jason Todd Day," recognizing Todd's historic leadership and lasting impact on South Oak Cliff High School and the City of Dallas.

As the Golden Bears closed out the parade route, applause echoed through The Cliff, not just for another championship trophy, but for a legacy built on belief, unity, and pride-one that continues to grow, right where it all began.

En los mismos vecindarios en que se criaron, los Golden Bears de South Oak Cliff celebraron un logro histórico más el sábado, pues los estudiantes, exalumnos, familias y demás aficionados llenaron el vecindario durante el desfile del campeonato en honor al equipo campeón de la División II, Clase 5A de la UIL de 2025.

Los Golden Bears fueron de nuevo el centro de atención, pero en esta ocasión, estuvieron rodeados por la comunidad que los alentó durante una de las temporadas más dominantes en la historia del fútbol americano en Texas.

Tras dos años en los que no alcanzaron el título estatal, South Oak Cliff marcó una victoria 35-19 contra Dr. Thomas E. Randle High School, consiguiendo así el último campeonato estatal del programa y culminando una temporada memorable más. La victoria marca la quinta aparición consecutiva de SOC en un partido del campeonato estatal, lo que incorpora a los Golden Bears en un grupo élite de tan solo ocho programas en Texas en alcanzar tal logro.

Para el entrenador principal Jason Todd, la celebración va más allá del fútbol.

"Significa mucho ver a toda la ciudad apoyar a los deportistas en este camino que hemos andado. Eso muestra cómo el éxito en el deporte afecta muchas cosas fuera del campo. La escuela ha mejorado académicamente en general, y la comunidad está orgullosa, no solo en Oak Cliff, sino en toda Dallas también", dijo Todd.

Todd también ha hecho historia con este último título, pues es el primer entrenador principal afroamericano en ganar tres campeonatos estatales de la UIL en fútbol americano de preparatoria en Texas. Pero mientras las carrozas pasaban ante multitudes que aclamaban y los jugadores saludaban al público, no se perdió de enfoque el logro colectivo.

"Lo que hemos logrado en South Oak Cliff es la hazaña más extraordinaria en la historia de las preparatorias de Texas. Hemos hecho de SOC una dinastía gracias al apoyo de la administración, a entrenadores que tienen un propósito más allá del deporte, a deportistas que saben lo que significa ser parte de un equipo y al apoyo de los padres y la comunidad", continúa Todd. "Nuestro legado perdurará pese al tiempo. No solo los últimos cinco años, sino también los que precedieron a la época buena que sentaron las bases que nos han traído a este punto. Y este no es el final; es tan solo el principio", dijo Todd.

El desfile fue tanto una celebración como una afirmación de lo esencial que es el programa de fútbol americano en la preparatoria de South Oak Cliff.

Conforme los Golden Bears alcanzaban el final del desfile, los aplausos se hicieron oír en todo Oak Cliff, no solo porque obtuvieron otro trofeo más, sino también por el legado que han hecho a partir de la fe en sí mismos, la unión y el orgullo; un legado que continúa creciendo, aquí donde todo empezó.
