Why Did Microsoft Stock Beat UiPath Over Five Years

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Two software companies grew their sales at about the same pace over the last three years. Yet over the five years to October 2026, Microsoft (MSFT) stock gained 76.8%, while UiPath (PATH) lost 72.2%. So where did the gap come from: faster sales growth, bigger profits, or investors paying more for each dollar of sales?

Who Has Beaten UiPath Over Five Years?

Much of the industry had a difficult five years, with the median Systems Software stock falling 49.7% over the five years to October 2026. Even so, UiPath's stock did better than only 33.8% of the 68 companies in that industry.

Nine companies with sales growth similar to UiPath's had stocks that did better. The table shows two of them, Microsoft and Fortinet. Microsoft's stock finished 149.0 points ahead over five years.

Company Sales growth, 3-year average P/E 1-year 3-year 5-year
UiPath (PATH) 14.5% 20.3x -14.3% -6.7% -72.2%
Microsoft (MSFT) 16.1% 29.1x 1.0% 57.6% 76.8%
Fortinet (FTNT) 14.7% 62.2x 110.4% 221.8% 168.4%

Price return to the Oct 23, 2026 close, excluding dividends. Companies in Systems Software whose sales grew within 4 points of PATH's. P/E: latest close over the last four quarters' earnings per share. UiPath's earnings over that period include a large non-operating benefit, so its P/E overstates how cheap the stock is on operating profit.

Fortinet (FTNT), which sells cybersecurity products, finished even further ahead of UiPath, outperforming it by 240.6 points.

Did Microsoft Grow Faster Than UiPath?

Not by much. Over the last three years, UiPath expanded its sales by an average of 14.5% a year, tracking closely with the 16.1% pace at Microsoft. Between 2021 and 2026, UiPath actually recorded higher sales growth, climbing 133.5% compared with 97.4% for Microsoft.

Microsoft sells software, cloud services, and devices, ranging from Office and the Azure cloud platform to Xbox. Since Microsoft's sales grew only slightly faster over three years, and more slowly over five, faster growth does not explain why Microsoft's stock did so much better.

Where Did The Gap Come From?

Profit per share explains part of Microsoft's own gain. Microsoft increased its earnings per share by 123.1% between 2021 and 2026, a pace faster than its sales growth, while widening its operating margin by 5.2 points.

UiPath experienced a much larger margin movement. The company shifted from an operating loss equal to 51.9% of its sales in the twelve months to July 2021 to an operating profit of 8.9% of sales in the twelve months to July 2026.

The rest of the answer lies in what investors pay. Because UiPath had no profit in 2021, the two companies are compared on price-to-sales: at the end of June 2021, investors paid 48.5 times sales for UiPath and 12.1 times for Microsoft. At the Oct 23, 2026 close, they paid about 4.3 times for UiPath and about 11.7 times for Microsoft. The multiple accounts for most of the difference. UiPath improved its business more than Microsoft did, but investors now pay a small fraction of what they once paid for each dollar of UiPath's sales.

UiPath sells customers a single platform to build, orchestrate, test and govern business processes, offering products such as UiPath Test Cloud. Management said fiscal Q2 2027 marked the company's fourth consecutive quarter of profit under standard accounting, crediting improved operational efficiency for the rise in its adjusted operating income.

What To Watch In UiPath's Next Report

During its September 3, 2026 call, management raised its fiscal 2027 forecast for adjusted operating income, its own measure of profit.

When UiPath reports fiscal Q3 2027 results, expected in December 2026, the figure to watch is its operating margin under standard accounting. This margin stood at 7.7% in fiscal Q2 2027, compared with a loss of 5.6% of sales a year earlier.

How To Act On PATH?

Not necessarily on UiPath alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Here are two companies from UiPath's own industry that have beaten it. Over the five years to October 2026, Microsoft stock rose 76.8% and Fortinet stock rose 168%, while UiPath stock fell 72.2%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
