WARRENDALE, Pa. (March 4, 2025) - The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium™ (AVSC), a program of SAE Industry Technologies Consortia (SAE ITC®), is excited to announce the publication of the AVSC Best Practice for Automated Driving System-Dedicated Vehicles (ADS-DVs) Immediate Post-Crash Behaviors and Interactions. This document provides essential guidance on the behaviors and interactions of ADS-DVs immediately following a crash. It presents a structured framework for behaviors and actions undertaken by the ADS-DV and is demonstrated through three example scenarios highlighting dependencies that may influence these interactions.
Automated driving system (ADS) manufacturers, developers, and operators need to take numerous variables into consideration when making decisions and evaluating ADS-DV behaviors and interactions immediately following a crash. This can help mitigate the impact severity and help ensure safer, more predictable ADS-DVs.
This best practice outlines the necessary actions and interactions that ADS-DVs should perform to mitigate additional risks and ensure the safety of all road users, including occupants, first responders, and other stakeholders.
"With the increasing deployment of ADS-DVs on public roads, it is essential to have defined protocols for immediate post-crash behaviors of these vehicles. This best practice serves as a foundation for broader industry consensus leading to standardization, while also opening the door for more dialogue in the AV industry. It also supports the AVSC goal of safer roadways for all users." - Darcyne Foldenauer AVSC Executive Director
