Ghana's retail food market is expanding, driven by a growing urban population seeking more diverse food products. Ghana's modern retail outlets are concentrated in the country's large urban centers; often acting as anchor stores in the major shopping malls. Outside of the capital city of Accra and the regional capitals, retail stores tend to be smaller. Convenience and price continue to shape Ghanaian consumer buying decisions, presenting growth opportunities across all retail channels. The retail sector remains dominated by small local grocers, who control 66 percent of the retail market. Supermarkets, hypermarkets, and the other modern food retailers account for 34 percent of retail sales. In 2025, U.S.-origin exports of consumer-oriented products to Ghana reached nearly $151 million, up 20 percent compared to $125 million in 2024; making the United States, Ghana's 4th largest supplier of consumer-oriented products. By CY 2026 (January-June) figures of $93 million, are now up 35 percent from 2025 levels.
