Reflecting On DoorDash's Emergency Food Response

  • Nearly 2 million meals delivered from more than 300 Project DASH partner organizations in November.

  • More than 20% of customers who used DoorDash SNAP promotion are located in food deserts, and one-third live in rural areas.

  • New survey data from more than 1,500 DoorDash customers who use SNAP on the platform shows significant increases in nutritious eating and reports positive impacts on household health.

This November, as millions of Americans faced risk of hunger, DoorDash mobilized a nationwide Emergency Food Response. We expanded deliveries to thousands of families in need through Project DASH and waived delivery and service fees for SNAP recipients to help make groceries more affordable.

Getting Food To Those In Need With Project DASH

Working with over 300 Project DASH partners, we helped power more than 100,000 free deliveries of an estimated nearly 2 million meals in November - reaching households experiencing food insecurity, many of whom temporarily lost access to SNAP.

These deliveries came at a crucial moment, as Project DASH partners increased their deliveries to meet the rising need, with some more than quadrupling their deliveries compared to a typical month.

From Albuquerque, NM to Allentown, PA, we were also honored to join alongside local, state, and federal lawmakers and local partners for a series of Emergency Food Response activations across the country, highlighting innovative approaches to meet the rising need and showcase how collaboration can help in the fight against hunger.

Helping More Families Stretch Their Budget

As SNAP benefits lapsed, we quickly worked with participating grocery partners across the country to cover the cost of delivery and service fees on hundreds of thousands of grocery orders for SNAP recipients in November. More than 20% of the customers who used this promotion live in food deserts, and one-third live in rural communities.

We also expanded deliveries to SNAP customers who had never before used home delivery - opening the door to more reliable access to fresh, affordable food to 300,000 customers who added a SNAP card in November.

New Data Underscores the Importance of SNAP

Beyond reach, we know that the impact of SNAP on DoorDash goes much deeper - it helps consumers improve how they shop, eat, and live. Our new report, From Food Deserts to Dinner Tables: How SNAP Delivery Removes Barriers and Supports Healthier Habits, combines DoorDash data with findings from a survey of more than 1,500 consumers who recently used SNAP on DoorDash.

The findings show meaningful changes to eating habits since using SNAP on DoorDash:

  • 31% are eating more fruits and vegetables, and 24% are eating less junk food.

  • 42% are cooking at home more often instead of turning to fast food or takeout.

  • 91% of those who made changes say it's had a positive impact on their household's health.

The data reinforces a clear message from households and hunger-relief organizations alike: when SNAP is strong and accessible, communities are healthier and more food secure.

Looking Ahead

We remain focused on leveraging our platform to help the organizations working on the front lines of hunger. As demand continues to grow and the need for support increases, we will keep working alongside community organizations, lawmakers, grocers, and our partners to ensure more families can access the food they need, when and where they need it.
