Deschutes County Public Health is urging residents to protect their health this holiday season by getting the flu vaccine. With celebrations bringing people together indoors, there's an increased risk of flu transmission, and although hospitalizations remain low, the percentage of positive flu tests in Central Oregon is rising.
"Flu season usually peaks in late winter or early spring, giving the virus time to spread. We expect to see more flu activity in the coming months," said Dr. Rita Bacho, manager of Deschutes County's Communicable Disease Prevention and Management Program. "Getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others, especially those who can't get vaccinated due to age or underlying health conditions."
"It's not too late to get vaccinated to ensure your holiday celebrations are joyful and not disrupted by illness," Bacho added.
According to the Oregon Health Authority, nearly 1 million Oregonians have been vaccinated so far this year, which is about 5 % less than last year. The decline in vaccination rates concerns health officials, especially since last year's flu season in Oregon was one of the worst on record.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. It can range from mild to severe, sometimes requiring hospitalization. While young children, older adults, pregnant people and those with certain health conditions face higher risks, anyone can become seriously ill.
Health organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend the flu vaccine for everyone six months and older. Those at higher risk, like young children and older adults, should prioritize getting vaccinated.
Flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines are available at your local pharmacy or through your healthcare provider. Individuals and families who have difficulty access immunization services can get vaccines at a County Public Health clinic. Here are the two locations:
