Griffith Announces 2 DOT Public Safety Grants to Virginia Tech Totaling Nearly $1.6 Million

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded Virginia Tech, located in Blacksburg, Virginia, two separate grants. One grant for $597,366 supports a three-module plan to study risky driving behaviors and improve driving habits. A second grant for $999,873 allows Virginia Tech to continue its educational demonstration efforts in local high schools throughout the United States. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

"Safe driving practices are important to bolster public safety.

"These DOT grants for nearly $1.6 million help Virginia Tech research unsafe driving habits, educate the public and improve public safety in our communities."

BACKGROUND

This grant money was made available through the DOT Fiscal Year 2025 High Priority Commercial Motor Vehicle Grant program.

The objective of the grant program is to support, enrich, and evaluate commercial motor vehicle safety programs and to target unsafe driving practices.

In the modules, Virginia Tech will track results using camera data, surveys and training feedback.
