Portland, OR - Councilor Loretta Smith expressed deep sadness at the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement and a champion for social justice and equality. She noted that his dedication to uplifting marginalized communities had a profound impact on society.
Rev. Jackson inspired millions through his tireless advocacy for voting rights, economic empowerment, and peace. He consistently reminded the nation that the struggle for equity is ongoing and requires unwavering commitment.

She recalled his visit to Portland following the racially motivated MAX stabbing in May 2017, when she arranged a meeting between Rev. Jackson and student survivor Micah Fletcher. During that meeting, Rev. Jackson offered words of encouragement and prayer to Micah and his father, Michael.
Councilor Smith highlighted Rev. Jackson's extraordinary ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds for a common cause. While his voice will be deeply missed, she emphasized that his message of hope and resilience will continue to inspire future generations.
