Boulder is proud to partner in the release of Wildfire Planning and Recovery Playbook

The City of Boulder is helping to amplify the recently updated Colorado Wildfire Planning and Recovery Playbook, developed in partnership with the State of Colorado, U.S. Forest Service and watershed groups. The Playbook has been updated and is available online at cdphe.colorado.gov/Wildfire-Playbook. This user-friendly and actionable guide identifies 11 critical steps that counties, tribes, municipalities, and water providers should take before, during, and after a wildfire to minimize impacts and facilitate recovery. City of Boulder staff played a lead role in the Playbook's original development and recent update.

The Playbook offers step-by-step guidance, including how to:

  • Prepare a list of critical contacts to facilitate information sharing before a fire and streamline recovery
  • Identify community values at risk and prioritize projects to protect those values
  • Engage in real-time fire and flood alerts
  • Access state and federal funding for recovery projects
  • Implement long-term, community-driven resilience solutions

"The Playbook is a unique and useable document that has already been used by several Colorado communities impacted by wildfires and is being replicated by other states," said Kate Dunlap, City of Boulder Drinking Water Quality Manager. "Working in partnership to develop the Playbook has been a great exercise for our staff to better plan, prepare and continue pre-fire coordination with other agencies. It has also been a good opportunity for us to assess our preparedness level and make adjustments where needed.

Wildfire resilience is a top priority for the City of Boulder and for our community. By helping to promote this Playbook, the city reinforces its dedication to proactive partnerships and regional collaboration to reduce wildfire risk and support effective recovery.
