Joseph T. Zikuski to Step Down as Police Chief

Resignation and Retirement Effective October 6

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.)-Mayor Jared M. Kraham on Tuesday issued the following statement:

"Yesterday, I accepted the resignation of Binghamton Police Chief Joseph T. Zikuski. He will step down from the Police Department and retire, effective October 6.

"This comes as the independent investigation into factors surrounding a July 18 incident in Johnson City involving Zikuski and his girlfriend is concluding.

"The outside law firm hired by the City to investigate is completing its written report, which will be released shortly, once finalized.

"Zikuski has been on paid administrative leave since July 20, when I was made aware of the incident, which occurred while Zikuski was off-duty.

"Acting Police Chief John C. Ryan will continue to lead the department in an interim role.

"The City will adhere to New York State Civil Service Law on the appointment of a new permanent chief of police, which is a tested civil service position.

"As BPD makes this transition, the investments and changes we've made in the department to build a strong foundation are more important than ever.

"As Mayor, I'm confident in the men and women who serve in our Police Department, and remain committed to the future of public safety in Binghamton."
