WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Gabe Amo (RI-01) released the following statement after voting no Republican's plan to cede more power to Elon Musk.
This reckless Republican bill would force the evictions of more than 32,000 households, threaten the essential benefits of Social Security, and cut nutrition assistance for seniors. Their plan also turns its back on Veterans by failing to include nearly $23 billion in advanced funding for the Toxic Exposures Fund to care for Veterans exposed to burn pits and Agent Orange.
"Today, I voted no on the Republican continuing resolution that would cede more power to Elon Musk and his assault on hardworking Americans," said Congressman Gabe Amo. "This reckless bill will hike housing costs and lead to poorer quality of health care for Veterans. It will slash rental assistance for low-income and working-class Americans. It cuts research funding for diseases like Alzheimer's. It fails to respond to the avian flu crisis. And it provides zero protections for Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.
"My colleagues had an opportunity to show leadership and reassert Congress' authority to determine how government invests in our families and our future. They failed. Instead of supporting seniors, protecting our national security, and lowering costs for working Americans, Republicans are evicting people from their homes and continuing their gleeful sprint to transfer wealth from the middle class to the richest 1%."
BACKGROUND
In an interview on March 6, Congressman Amo stated that the burden was on Republican majority to show leadership and put together a package that prevents a shutdown. He called on them return to the negotiation table to pass a funding bill that actually meets the needs of the American people instead of their partisan effort to hurt the American people.
The bill cuts funding for nondefense programs and services by $13 billion while increasing defense spending by $6 billion compared to fiscal year 2024 enacted levels. It cuts nondefense funding by $15 billion and defense by $3 billion relative to the fiscal year 2025 levels in the Fiscal Responsibility Act agreement.
