Washington, DC - Today, Speaker Johnson announcedthat the House will adjourn earlier than planned this week, abandoning the chamber's remaining work in order to begin August recess in mid-July. This comes amidst continued public outcry following Congressional Republicans' vote to pass Donald Trump's egregious budget reconciliation bill that endangers public health, eliminates stable jobs, and raises costs on families and small businesses.
In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:
"Leave it to House Republicans to treat themselves to an early vacation when their only accomplishments are saddling American households with higher energy bills, killing jobs, and taking life-saving health care coverage away from more than 10 million people. It's clear their priorities are not in line with the average family or small business just trying to get by. They voted against our right to breathe clean air and drink safe water, and now they're abandoning the rest of the work they should be doing in order to start their August recess weeks early. The American people are watching, and on behalf of the Sierra Club's millions of members and supporters, we plan to show up during their time home and hold Congressional Republicans accountable for failing to do their jobs."
