Apply for seasonal jobs in youth recreation programs

If you're at least 16 years-old and looking for a summer job, we're looking for overnight camp staff, recreation activity leaders, lifeguards, and others who will provide fun, active, and creative programs for youth.

You might be someone who can teach kids to help navigate the outdoors at one of our overnight camps in the Sierras, show them how to use tools at our innovative Adventure Playground, or lead programs for tots.

Qualifications for seasonal recreation jobs

To qualify for seasonal positions, you must be 16 years or older, be able to work 20-40 hours per week, and be available for work May through August. To be a lifeguard, you must be 15 years of age and must have a current lifeguard certification.

If you get offered a job, you'll also have to pass a tuberculosis test and complete a Live Scan security background check.

Seasonal positions in Berkeley

All positions are open until filled and will start at the end of May.

  • Playground Leader Trainee (16+), $23.55 hourly
    Help lead a wide variety of fun and engaging activities for day campers from Kindergarten - 8th Grade.
  • Recreational Activity Leader (18+), $27.05 - $33.07 hourly
    Plan, lead, and supervise camp activities. Put your leadership skills into practice through coaching and supervising Playground Leader Trainees. Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience required.
  • Sports Field Monitor (18+), $23.55 hourly
    Supervise sports programs and help set up for games at ball fields, gyms, and outdoor hard courts.
  • Sports Official (Non-Career Intermittent), $23.61 - $39.42 hourly
    Officiate a wide variety of sports and athletic events at an assigned gymnasium, ballfield, or court.

Certified lifeguards are encouraged to join us to keep swimmers safe at one of our two outdoor pools. You must have completed a lifeguard certification course before applying for an aquatics position. If you don't have a certification, you can register for an American Lifeguard Certification training course through the City's recreation registration portal.

Overnight camp positions at Echo Lake Youth Camp and Family Camp

Our overnight camps employ a variety of roles, including cabin counselors and staff to support recreation programs, food service, maintenance, and medical aid.

For the summer, Staff will live and work at Echo Lake Camp, located near South Lake Tahoe, or Berkeley Tuolumne Camp, located near Yosemite National Park. All positions come with meals and lodging included. Transportation to camp can be arranged; just ask the Camp Manager upon hiring.

  • Camp Staff Member, $85.95 - $103.14 daily
    Help lead activities, food service, maintenance, and campers for Echo Lake or Tuolumne Camp
  • Camp Staff Leader, $108.30 - $123.77 daily
    Lead activities, food service, maintenance, and admin for Echo Lake or Tuolumne Camps
  • Camp Staff Supervisor (Non-Career), $134.60 - $167.09 Daily
    Supervise daily camp operations and lead essential functions at Echo Lake or Tuolumne Camp.
  • Camp Maintenance Mechanic, $37.73 - $44.96 hourly
    Completes routine maintenance and construction of Camp facilities
