Deputy Minister of Defence Graces Launch of the First Edition of “Sri Lanka’s Maritime Heritage and Historical Significance”at Navy Headquarters

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), graced the official launch of the first edition of "Sri Lanka's maritime heritage and historical significance", held at the Main Auditorium of Sri Lanka Navy Headquarters yesterday (12 June).

The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, received the Deputy Minister and other distinguished guests upon their arrival at the venue.

This publication is a joint effort by the Sri Lanka Navy, leading academics, and key national institutions. Its goal is to raise public awareness about Sri Lanka's rich maritime heritage and how the surrounding seas have shaped the nation's history, culture, and development. The collection covers Sri Lanka's maritime journey from prehistoric times to the post colonial era, offering readers a clear and complete picture of transoceanic interactions across the Indian Ocean and beyond. The editorial board is headed by Senior Professor Raj Somadeva, whose leadership has been instrumental in bringing the publication to fruition.

Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, the Deputy Minister commended the Sri Lanka Navy for yet again demonstrating its capacity to unite diverse stakeholders in collaboration and cooperation toward a common goal, documenting and promoting the nation's maritime heritage. The Deputy Minister also lauded the publication as a splendid contribution, noting that it is structured around key themes such as, Trade & Commerce, Culture & Nature, Underwater Technology & Heritage, and Case Studies, making the book a monumental account of Sri Lanka's maritime story.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Commanders of the Army and Air Force, former Navy Commander Admiral Priyantha Perera (Retd), Director Generals of Archeology, Central Cultural Fund, and National Archives, senior Naval Officers, distinguished academics and invitees.
