Estonian Border Guard vessel taking part in a Frontex joint operation in Greece capsized

Yesterday afternoon, an Estonian Border Guard vessel taking part in a Frontex joint operation in Greece capsized and later sank in the Eastern Mediterranean near the island of Megisti.

There were five people on board, including members of the Estonian crew, a local officer, and the Estonian Ambassador to Greece. All persons on board sustained injuries in the incident. Four were evacuated by helicopter to Rhodes for medical care, while one person received assistance locally.

Two Estonian crew members remain hospitalised. Their condition is assessed as serious but not life-threatening. The ambassador sustained minor injuries.

Those on board were able to exit the vessel and call for assistance. The responding Hellenic coast guard ensured a swift evacuation.

Frontex is in close contact with the Estonian and Greek authorities as they investigate the circumstances of the incident. Our first concern is the wellbeing of those affected.

The circumstances of the accident are under investigation.
