SOUTH FULTON, GA - (March 25, 2025) - The City of South Fulton City Council has unanimously approved and proclaimed April 1 through April 30 as National Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in the City of South Fulton, supporting and recognizing individuals affected by autism spectrum disorder.
The resolution, introduced by District Four Councilman Jaceey Sebastian, underscores the City of South Fulton's steadfast commitment to fostering awareness and cultivating a genuine understanding of autism. In alignment with a broader national initiative, the city stands in solidarity with efforts to elevate consciousness surrounding autism-a condition that transcends racial, ethnic, and socio-economic boundaries. According to the World Health Organization, approximately one in 270 individuals globally is diagnosed with a form of autism, a neurodevelopmental condition that significantly influences social interaction, communication, and behavioral patterns.
The formal recognition of National Autism Awareness Month through proclamation this year is of paramount importance, as it marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This milestone serves as a poignant reminder of the progress made in promoting inclusivity and equal rights for individuals with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum. By officially recognizing this month, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing understanding, support, and opportunities for individuals with autism, while honoring the legacy of the ADA's transformative impact on society. This proclamation not only highlights the ongoing need for advocacy and awareness but also underscores the collective responsibility to create a more equitable and accessible world for all.
"National Autism Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the need for greater understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism," said Councilman Sebastian . "As a community, we must continue to cultivate an environment of empathy, acceptance, and inclusivity for everyone, especially those with disabilities. This month, and every month, I continue to advocate, and stand with individuals with autism and their families, working toward a more supportive and accessible future for all."
To further support Autism Awareness Month, the City of South Fulton and Councilman Sebastian invite residents and organizations to join in the 4th Annual Autism Sensory Festival on April 19 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Wilkerson Mill Park located at 8095 Wilkerson Mill Road, South Fulton, GA 30268. The event will feature sensory zones, family activities, community resources, live entertainment, food vendors, and a calming station, all designed to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
