OAS Electoral Mission in Peru Rejects Threats Against Electoral Authorities and Urges Completion of the Vote Count

May 4, 2026

The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) expresses its concern over threats and acts of harassment directed at electoral authorities, journalists, and other stakeholders in the context of the current electoral process in Peru. The Mission emphasizes that violence and confrontation are not legitimate means for democratic coexistence.

In this context, the OAS/EOM, led by the former Secretary General of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), Víctor Rico Frontaura, recalls that political parties and candidates have a responsibility to act peacefully, avoiding the use of hate speech or any form of incitement to violence.

The OAS/EOM takes note of requests for audits, proceedings, and investigations aimed at strengthening the transparency of the 2026 electoral process. In this regard, it underscores that such actions must be carried out with the highest technical rigor, ensuring that they do not interfere with the normal development of the ongoing electoral process.

Likewise, the Mission considers it essential that authorities focus their efforts on ensuring an efficient second round, in strict compliance with the current electoral timetable. In particular, it urgently calls on electoral authorities to complete, as swiftly as possible and in full accordance with the law, the final vote count, in order to proceed with the official declaration of the first round presidential results and the determination of the political organizations that will participate in the runoff.

The OAS/EOM will continue to closely monitor all stages of the electoral process and will deploy a broad presence throughout the national territory during the second round, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, integrity, and confidence in the democratic process.
