Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa Hosts Sold-Out State of the City Address

Speech highlighted record-breaking construction activity, public safety, and community spirit

Edinburg, TX - The City of Edinburg welcomed a full house Thursday evening for the sold-out State of the City Address delivered by Mayor Omar Ochoa at the Edinburg Arts, Culture and Event Center. With the theme "Moving Edinburg Forward," the event brought together residents, elected officials, business leaders, and regional partners to celebrate a year of progress and community-driven momentum.

In his first State of the City Address as mayor, Ochoa reflected on the achievements of 2025 while emphasizing the people and partnerships that continue to shape Edinburg's success.

"This event is about you," Ochoa told attendees. "Because a city is not made of concrete and steel; it is made of its people. You are the heart, the soul, the engine of Edinburg."

The evening highlighted Edinburg's continued growth as one of the fastest-growing cities in the Rio Grande Valley and among the top in Texas and the nation. In 2025, retail sales surpassed $2 billion, and the city experienced record-breaking construction activity, reaching $407 million in approved valuations-the highest in its history.

Mayor Ochoa also recognized the strong economic partnerships fueling the city's momentum, including the ongoing impact of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the region's leading healthcare systems. These collaborations continue to drive job creation, innovation, and opportunity for residents.

The address underscored the City's commitment to efficiency and service, with Edinburg earning national recognition for permit approval processes and maintaining a business-friendly environment that supports entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Quality of life remained a central focus of the evening. From record-breaking community events and festivals to expanded parks programming and youth sports participation, Edinburg continues to foster a vibrant and active community. The city hosted more than 350 events in 2025, reinforcing its reputation as the "City of Festivals."

Public safety achievements were also a major highlight. For the first time in more than 30 years, Edinburg recorded zero homicides in a single year. Overall crime reductions, innovative programs like the Drone as First Responder initiative, and the launch of the city's own police academy reflect a continued commitment to keeping residents safe.

Ochoa took time to recognize the dedication of city employees, first responders, and community partners, crediting them as the driving force behind Edinburg's success. Closing his address, Mayor Ochoa called on residents to remain engaged and united in shaping the city's future.

"When I say 'Moving Edinburg Forward,' it is not simply a slogan-it is a promise," he said. "A promise to choose community over division, to create opportunity for every family, and to build a future where every resident can thrive."

The evening concluded with a celebration of Edinburg's shared achievements and a renewed sense of optimism for the years ahead.
