Fireworks Safety Tips for a Safe Fourth of July

Gilbert, Ariz. - Before celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks, take a moment to review these important safety reminders.

Fireworks Safety
If you plan to use consumer fireworks this season, keep these precautions in mind to help ensure a safe holiday for everyone:

• Always have an adult present when fireworks are being handled
• Avoid loose or flowing clothing that could catch fire
• Only use fireworks outdoors on your own property, well away from dry vegetation
• Never ignite fireworks in the middle of the street
• Maintain a safe distance and make sure spectators stay several feet from any fireworks
• Keep a bucket of water nearby
• Call 9-1-1 right away if a fire or injury occurs
• Permissible fireworks may not be sold to anyone under 16

Fireworks Disposal
Improper disposal leads to house and garage fires every year. After using fireworks:
• Soak used fireworks in a bucket of water for at least 24 hours
• Double-wrap the soaked materials in plastic bags
• Place the soaked, wrapped fireworks in your trash (not recycling) bin
• Store your trash bin outside and at least three feet away from any structures

Fireworks 101
Under state law and Gilbert Town Ordinance, non-aerial fireworks may be used on private property with the owner's permission from June 24-July 6. Fireworks are not allowed on public property, including parks, streets, and public rights-of-way. Using fireworks outside the state-allowed dates can result in a $1,000 fine. A list of permitted fireworks is available here.

Illegal Fireworks
To report illegal fireworks or fireworks being used outside the permitted dates, contact the Gilbert Police Department's non-emergency line at (480) 503-6500. Using the non-emergency number helps keep 9-1-1 available for life-threatening emergencies.

Please Be Considerate
As you celebrate, please be mindful of neighbors, avoid late-night use, and remember that loud noises may be distressing to pets, combat veterans, and those sensitive to sound.
