Peruvian faculty learn from UWO professors in weeklong seminar on leadership and governance

During a Lecture and Lunch session, UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Manohar Singh, standing, speaks with a group of Peruvian guests who were on campus for a weeklong seminar in leadership and governance.

A delegation of Peruvian faculty from the Universidad Católica de Santa María in Arequipa, Peru, made the most of their time on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus-taking in a professional development seminar focused on leadership and governance while elevating the academic partnership.

The weeklong seminar helped prepare 10 Peruvian leaders with ethical, strategic and institutional competancies. The focus of four central topics and themes were ethical leadership and social responsibility, behavioral and psychological insight, political and institutional analysis, and organizational and management capability.

UWO professors presented modules, with Peruvian visitors striving to master sets of learning objectives.

"They were really energized and excited to be here," said Andrew Smock, UWO Graduate School interim dean and Research and Innovation associate vice chancellor, "and I could see their confidence with English increase as the week went on."

Smock said none of the Peruvians used English as their primary language and were using a translation app with earbuds to better understand lessons.

Topics of study in the full-day sessions included Ethical and Socially Responsible Leadership; Behavioral Economics for Leadership; Comparative Political Institutions; Modern Political Thought; Experiences of Governance; and Organizational Change Management and Leadership.

Instructors were Andrew Soderberg, School of Business; David Fuller, School of Business; Tracy Slagter, School of Public Affairs and Global Engagement; Evan Williams, School of Public Affairs and Global Engagement; and Michael Rutz, School of Public Affairs and Global Engagement; Nathan Stuart, School of Business; and Andrew Miller, School of Business.

Peruvian visitors interacted with UWO faculty during a luncheon and closing ceremony Aug. 7.

The visit began July 30 with an All-American Cookout Welcome Reception at Culver Family Welcome Center. It concluded Friday, Aug. 7 with a Closing Lunch and Ceremony in Reeve Memorial Union. The Peruvian delegates received special recognition with a UWO boxed pen and pin.

They thanked UWO teachers and leadership team for what was termed a "phenomenal week."

A group of 2-3 UWO faculty intend to go to Peru in January 2027 to share knowledge on AI-related topics.
