CANYON, Texas - Homeschooled students and their families will get the inside track on how to prepare for college at an upcoming conference at West Texas A&M University.
The WT Homeschool Conference will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 2 in Legacy Hall in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center on WT's Canyon campus.
Registration is free and includes lunch. To register, visit wtamu.my.salesforce-sites.com/EventListing?eventId=701Vt00001KKy8uIAD.
Attendees will learn how to start planning while in high school for their future college success including what courses and academic experiences best prepare them for higher education. They'll also learn how to build a strong transcript, how to take advantage of dual credit and other college-level opportunities, and how to apply for college.
"We're excited to host the Homeschool Conference for a second year and continue building relationships with homeschool students and their families," said Dr. Rick Haasl, vice provost for enrollment management. "These students bring a unique level of motivation and preparation, and we believe WT is a place where they can thrive. Our focus is on equipping students with the tools, support and opportunities they need to graduate and succeed. We look forward to an impactful event that helps families better understand the pathways available to them at WT and the value of a WT education."
Presenters will include Haasl; WT President Walter V. Wendler; Sedrick Knowlton, executive director of recruitment and external relations; Kyal Browne, WT admissions officer; Tim Lambert, president of Texas Homeschool Coalition; Alex Letkeman of The HomeScholar Counseling; and current WT students who were homeschooled.
WT strives to be the most homeschool friendly University in Texas by providing students with individualized services, by empowering them to make decisions regarding their own education, and by giving them opportunities to foster personal growth and exploration.
Recruiting, retaining and rewarding the best students is a key mission of the University's long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
That plan is fueled by the One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which raised more than $200 million dollars, the largest such campaign in Texas Panhandle history.
