Shares of KLA (KLAC)lost 12.1% in the month ending October 20, 2026, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.6%. KLA has not fallen alone. Two of its closest peers, Applied Materials and Lam Research, fell 12.8% each over the same dates. If the wider market turns too, how far has KLA stock fallen in past market shocks, and how long did it stay down?

KLA Stock Has Fallen Further Than The S&P 500

During the 2008-2009 financial crisis, KLA stock lost 69% while the S&P 500 lost 53%. That marked the steepest decline for the shares across the 15 market shocks they have traded through since 2007. During the 2022 inflation and Fed tightening shock, KLA fell 39%, compared with 24% for the index. Across all of those shocks, KLA dropped an average of 20.4%, a deeper decline than the 15.8% average for the S&P 500.

The stock typically recovered within a few months. The median recovery time from the stock's low to its earlier high was 2.3 months. Two recoveries took significantly more time. KLA needed 26.6 months after the financial crisis. Following the summer 2007 credit crunch, the shares took 65.8 months to climb back to their July 2007 high, a wait that ran through the whole 2008-2009 crisis.

KLA's Sales Growth Has Slowed, But Margins Have Not

KLA posted revenue of $13.6 billion for the four fiscal quarters ending June 30, 2026. Growth slowed to 11.7% during that period, down from 23.9% in the prior year. The company generates most of its sales through its Semiconductor Process Control segment. That division accounted for $10.9 billion of KLA's $12.2 billion in total fiscal 2025 revenue.

The company recorded an operating margin of 41.7% over the latest twelve months, compared with 18.5% for the S&P 500. KLA's twelve-month margin was below today's 41.7% at 37 of the 40 quarter ends since fiscal 2017. The business also carries little debt. Total debt equals 2.9% of its market value, compared with 19.7% for the S&P 500.

What Risks Did KLA Management Flag In July?

During the July 28, 2026 call, management said KLA was "still dealing with some headwinds as related to memory pricing." Memory is expected to make up about 27% of Semiconductor Process Control systems revenue from chip customers in the September quarter, management said. During the June quarter, a better mix of KLA Services revenue and manufacturing scale helped offset the memory pricing and tariff headwinds.

Management also cited a supply problem. KLA dealt with shortages of some longer lead time materials in the first half of calendar 2026. Lead times across the company run about 12 months, stretching closer to 18 to 24 months on certain products. KLA is expected to release its next report on or around October 28, 2026. Gross margin for the September quarter, which management guided at 62.5% plus or minus 1 percentage point, is the measure to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On KLAC?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
