WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) is a cosponsor of Senator Tim Kaine's S.J. Res. 124, to direct the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against the Republic of Cuba that have not been authorized by Congress. Senator Alsobrooks voted "No" tonight against the Republican point of order that blocked a vote on S.J. Res. 124. Senator Alsobrooks believes the Senate must vote to block President Trump from unilaterally launching another unauthorized conflict in Cuba. See Senator Alsobrooks' full statement below:
"Whether President Trump and Republicans like it or not, the Constitution is clear: only Congress has the authority to declare war. President Trump has proven he will order the U.S. military to war without the support of the American people. While he has already taken our country into an unauthorized war with Iran, with no clear objectives, no results, and no exit strategy, he has irresponsibly threatened regime change in Cuba.
"And once again, who is footing the bill? Hardworking American families. A conflict with Cuba would cost American taxpayers billions of dollars more, deepen an existing humanitarian crisis in Cuba, and put American service members in harm's way.
"Republicans must join us in defending the Constitution and serving as a check on this out-of-control President. America cannot afford another war."
