In 2023, the New York City Council took a bold step toward dramatically improving the CityFHEPS program by passing a slate of bills that would have allowed more people to move from shelter into housing quicker, while keeping others housed.
Over the past two years, the mayor has held up the implementation of these improvements through litigation, a political ploy that hurt vulnerable New Yorkers.
Today, the State Appellate Division ruled against the mayor's legal challenge, clearing the way for much needed improvements to CityFHEPS. The Community Service Society of New York urges the mayor to respect the court's ruling and stop standing in the way of improvements to a program that is vital to New Yorkers struggling with the city's housing crisis.
