Main Street closure scheduled Saturday for hazardous tree removal

Main Street closure scheduled Saturday for hazardous tree removal

Published on December 04, 2025

The city will temporarily close a portion of Main Street on Saturday, Dec. 6, to safely remove a compromised American elm located in Heritage Park.

The American elm is approximately 90% dead, and part of the tree has already fallen onto a pedestrian walkway. Another large branch remains hanging, creating an immediate hazard. The tree is no longer viable for preservation or stabilization. Because so little living tissue remains, arborists cannot safely climb it, making crane-assisted removal the only feasible option.

"To protect the community and city infrastructure, this tree must be removed immediately," said Joel McElhany, Park & Recreation assistant director. "Our team evaluated multiple removal methods, but due to the site's steep terrain, overhead power lines and limited access points, closing Main Street was the only safe alternative."

Road closure details

  • Closure begins: 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6
  • Estimated completion: Approximately 3 p.m.
  • Location: Southbound North Main Street between Northwest Fourth Street and Bluff Street
  • Detour: Drivers will follow a marked detour route around the closure. A crane will be staged on Main Street.
