Congressman Scott Franklin (FL-18), Chairman of the Environment Subcommittee on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, today announced the House Science, Space and Technology Committee advanced the Weather Act Reauthorization Act of 2025. This bipartisan legislation strengthens America's weather forecasting systems. Franklin led efforts to develop the package, which includes provisions inspired by his TAME Extreme Weather and Wildfires Act introduced earlier this year.
The measure modernizes NOAA's forecasting capabilities by accelerating the use of artificial intelligence, improving hurricane and tornado prediction, enhancing emergency communications, and strengthening partnerships with the private sector to deliver faster, more reliable information when severe weather threatens lives and property.
"NOAA plays a critical role in keeping Americans safe when severe weather strikes," Franklin said. "With hurricane season underway, Floridians know all too well the need for forecasts they can trust. This bill ensures NOAA has the tools and technology to deliver accurate, timely information that helps families prepare, protects farmers' crops, and gives first responders the warnings they need when every second counts."
The bill also delivers direct benefits for Florida's agricultural producers and conservation partners through continued investment in tools such as the Drought Information System, the Soil Moisture Monitoring Network, and the National Mesonet. These resources help protect crops, conserve water, and support resilience in the face of future challenges.
The Weather Act Reauthorization Act of 2025 is the first full reauthorization since the original 2017 law, which laid the groundwork for modernizing NOAA's forecasting capabilities. This bill builds on that progress by improving hurricane and tornado prediction, enhancing emergency communications and expanding NOAA's ability to partner with the private sector. The inclusion of AI provisions inspired by Franklin's TAME Extreme Weather and Wildfires Act ensures NOAA integrates advanced technology into its mission. The bill now moves to the House floor for consideration.
