East International Speedway Boulevard Revitalization Nears Completion!

The long-awaited transformation of East International Speedway Boulevard (ISB) is nearing completion. Construction started almost two years ago on this collaboration between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the City of Daytona Beach, which redefines the safety, accessibility and aesthetic appeal of the iconic beachside gateway.

A safer and more aesthetically pleasing corridor

The enhancements along the eight-block stretch from the Halifax River Bridge to State Road A1A include:

  • Widened and resurfaced travel lanes and sidewalks for vehicles and pedestrians.
  • A raised median to enhance traffic safety and flow.
  • Underground placement of overhead utilities, ensuring a cleaner skyline and fewer disruptions during weather events.
  • Improved crosswalks at key intersections, prioritizing pedestrian safety.

In keeping with FDOT's "Complete Streets" philosophy, these upgrades ensure the road is safer, more accessible and functional for all users, from motorists to cyclists and pedestrians.

What's Next?

The project is entering its final stages, with the remaining tasks focusing on landscaping the medians. Volusia County is also nearing completion of renovations to the International Speedway Boulevard beach approach. More parking spaces were created, landscaping was expanded, a new restroom building was built, bike racks were added, and sidewalks and lighting were upgraded. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is in the works and will be announced soon, offering the community a chance to celebrate these achievements.

More road improvements are planned in the tourist core

Starting this month, FDOT will launch a $20.5 million initiative to resurface and add pedestrian safety features in a 3.6-mile stretch from State Road A1A north of East ISB to Milsap Road.

Project Highlights:

  • Resurfacing and subtle alignment shifts for improved road conditions.
  • Enhanced pedestrian safety with wider sidewalks, raised midblock crossings equipped with pedestrian-activated signals and ADA-compliant curb ramps.
  • Traffic signal and lighting upgrades for better visibility and flow.
  • Drainage improvements to address water management and prevent flooding.
  • Raised intersections to increase pedestrian and vehicle safety.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • Intermittent lane closures and detours along northbound and southbound S.R. A1A.
  • Limited access to certain driveways along the project corridor, with coordination provided to affected property owners.
  • Regular updates through signage, electronic boards and communication channels to ensure the community remains informed.

Timeline:

  • Project Start Date: January 2025
  • Estimated Completion: Fall 2026

Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians should use caution when traveling through the construction zone. Please follow posted signage, avoid distractions and remain attentive.
