WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) and U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA-10) applauded an announcement from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and United Airlines to invest at least $20 billion to upgrade Washington Dulles International Airport.
"These investments by United and MWAA will help Dulles service almost double the number of planes, passengers, and visitors," said Warner. "Dulles will not only be an international gateway to our nation's capital, Virginia, and the East Coast, but become a destination itself. I look forward to working with United Airlines, MWAA, the Commonwealth, the Department of Transportation, and all other partners to get this done."
"I'm thrilled that United Airlines is making a significant investment to accelerate improvements at Dulles Airport," said Kaine. "I've been proud of what we've accomplished together so far to grow and improve safety at Dulles, and make it easier for people to get to and from there by extending the Silver Line. I look forward to seeing how these improvements will modernize the airport, improve the customer experience, expand capacity, and grow the region's economy. I'll continue working with our partners to make Dulles the premier airport on the East Coast."
"This investment will bring more jobs to our community and boost our local economy. And by modernizing the airport, it will help Dulles maintain its status as a world-class airport with a better experience for travelers and more flight options for Virginians," said Subramanyam. "I will continue to work with MWAA, United, and Dulles employees to make sure this project benefits our community."
Warner, Kaine, and Subramanyam have secured significant investments in Dulles Airport, including funding for safety improvements and the construction of Concourse E. Warner and Kaine also played a significant role in expanding the Silver Line Metrorail, which includes a stop at Dulles. As Governor of Virginia, Kaine helped broker the deal between MWAA, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the Commonwealth of Virginia, and local governments to construct the Silver Line. The Dulles Airport Metro Station has surpassed 5.7 million customer trips since it opened in 2022 and is the busiest stop of the Silver Line Phase II extension.
