MACHIAS, Maine - The University of Maine at Machias has opened a new on-campus food pantry to give students convenient access to groceries and everyday essentials. The pantry officially opened on Monday, Nov. 3, and will be located in the Student Success Center on the second floor of Torrey Hall.
Open during regular building hours, the pantry offers non-perishable food items and common toiletries for any UMaine Machias student to access as needed. The initiative was made possible through generous funding from the University Credit Union (UCU) and will be maintained by the Office of Student Life.
"We're so grateful to the University Credit Union for helping us create this important resource," said Megan Walsh, dean and campus director at UMaine Machias. "Our goal is to remove barriers that may interfere with student success. Having access to food and basic essentials is a key part of that."
Ree Anna Bridges, community engagement manager for the Machias branch of University Credit Union, emphasized UCU's commitment to helping students thrive. "We're proud to partner with UMaine Machias to make the student food pantry a reality and support the students' well-being." Bridges said.
While a number of dedicated resources exist throughout Washington County to assist residents facing food insecurity, the UMaine Machias pantry ensures that students have direct, on-campus access to food support at any time during the academic year.
