Fewer trucks. Less traffic. Less road wear. Less fuel consumption. Fewer labour constraints. Less CO2 emissions. The benefits are huge. So why the ban?
As it stands, even if two EU countries - such as France and Belgium - allow 44-tonne trucks on their roads, they can't cross each other's borders. We discussed the issue with Enrique Muzard, IRU member AFTRI's General Delegate, and how they are using a different approach to campaign for change.
Why is the 44-tonne question important?
It's a perennial problem.
It hampers our exports, particularly in the agricultural sector, limiting load consolidation and, consequently, decarbonisation.
How are you raising awareness?
We're raising public awareness through two comic strips.
In just a few minutes, anyone can grasp - with a touch of humour - the 44-tonne truck issue in cross-border transport.
What has been the reception?
Very positive. We've received strong support, particularly from the agricultural sector.
Any other creative ideas?
Yes, over time, we will create additional content and gradually build a complete comic book!
