Gilbert Police Department Launches “Know Your Ride” Campaign to Educate Community on E-Bike and Electric Motorcycle Laws

Gilbert, Ariz. - The Gilbert Police Department is introducing a new public education initiative: Know Your Ride, a campaign designed to help residents understand the important differences between electric bicycles and electric motorcycles and the laws that apply to each.

As electric two-wheelers become more popular, so can the confusion about how they're classified and regulated. While electric bicycles and electric motorcycles may look alike, they are treated very differently under Arizona law.

What the Campaign Covers

The Know Your Ride campaign is focused on educating parents, teens, and riders of all ages about:

  • The legal differences between e-bikes and electric motorcycles before a decision is made to purchase one
  • Where these vehicles are allowed and where they're prohibited in Gilbert
  • Who is permitted under Arizona law to ride them
  • The rules of the road that apply to each

What is an Electric Motorcycle?

An electric motor-driven cycle typically includes:

  • A top speed over 30 mph
  • A motor rated above 750 watts
  • No pedals, or pedals that don't function

Why this Matters

If your vehicle qualifies as an electric motorcycle, you are legally required to:

  • Be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver's license with a motorcycle ("M") endorsement
  • Register the vehicle with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and display an ADOT-issued license plate
  • Carry insurance
  • Follow all motor vehicle laws, including helmet requirements for riders under 18

Know Before You Buy or Ride

Before purchasing or riding an electric two-wheeler, Gilbert residents are encouraged to:

  • Confirm the vehicle type. Just because it looks like a bike doesn't mean it's treated like one
  • Review the manufacturer's specifications
  • Contact the Gilbert Police Department with any questions to ensure you're making a safe and legal choice

This campaign is part of the Gilbert Police Department's ongoing commitment to community safety and education. By understanding the rules of the road, riders can help protect themselves and others.
