(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Today, Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-MA.) and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), along with Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Representatives Diana DeGette (D-CO), Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL) Senator, Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act. The EACH Act would eliminate long-standing barriers to care for people who qualify for public health insurance. The bill would also prohibit federal interference with private health insurance companies that provide coverage for abortion care.
In response, Power to Decide CEO and practicing OB-GYN, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, issued the following statement:
"At a time when millions of people are struggling to access the health care they need, including abortion care, we applaud Congressional champions for reintroducing the EACH Act. As people try to navigate the confusing patchwork of abortion access across the country, they are facing a growing number of bans and restrictions on abortion care. These unnecessary barriers are having a dangerous and deadly impact that is more likely to harm women of color, young people and people struggling to make ends meet.
"As an OB-GYN, I've seen first hand how important it is for my patients to get the reproductive care they need and deserve, despite having to constantly face so many barriers. This is unacceptable and no one should have to jump through hoops to get basic health care.
"We thank Congresswoman Pressley, Senator Tammy Duckworth and all the champions of this legislation for their continued leadership. We urge their colleagues to join them and us in supporting the EACH Act. The EACH Act is a bold and necessary step towards a world in which all people can access the care they need regardless of what insurance they have, where they live, or how much money they make. Everyone deserves health care free from barriers and interference. The EACH Act is one important step in making that vision a reality."
