UVI Continues to Monitor Tropical Storm Erin

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) continues to closely monitor the progress of Tropical Storm (TS) Erin, whose wind speed has increasedsince our last update. According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 p.m. advisory, TS Erin has maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour, and is moving west with a forward motion of 17 miles per hour. Heavy rains are expected beginning late Friday. At present, there areno coastal watches or warningsin effect for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

University staff have begun preparations to ensure backup power systemsare ready and to assess the need for sandbag distributionin the event of flooding. If necessary, the Physical Plant will distribute plastic sheeting to protect equipment and assist with securing offices.

Stay Alert and Access UVI's Storm Preparedness Resources

The University continues to urge all students, faculty, and staff to remain alertand ensure they are prepared. For storm preparation tips, links to storm tracking resources, and guidance on staying informed, visit UVI's Emergency Preparedness page,accessible from the footer of the University's website at https://www.uvi.edu. UVI's Emergency Preparedness Planis also available on the page, along with a link to the National Weather Service Hurricane Preparedness Information, which has information on what to do to prepare before a Tropical Storm or Hurricane. UVI's Emergency Operations Committee will continue to monitor the system and will provide updates as conditions change.

All UVI students and employees are strongly encouraged to register for Bucs Alert,the University's emergency notification system that delivers critical updates via text message and email.
